Association of British Climbing Walls

The Association of British Climbing Walls (ABC) was formed in 1994. Most of the main dedicated climbing centres are members. As the representative body of Climbing Centre Managers and Owners, the ABC has three main objectives:

  1. Development and benchmarking of safe practice and quality management processes for operating climbing centres
  2. Production and promotion of a sustainable national climbing centre development strategy
  3. Promotion and development of sustainable and synergistic ABC member’s network

See the Association of British Climbing Walls for full details of their work and Membership

The ABC and the MCofS

The MCofS have regular contact with the ABC via an ABC Member Wall Operator who attends ABC meetings acting as our representative and is also on the MCofS Sports Development Committee. The ABC is an Associate Member of the BMC and representatives from the BMC sit as observers at ABC meetings.

Recent joint initiatives between the ABC, BMC and MCofS include formalisation of standard forms for use at ABC Member walls as follows:

  • ABC Registration Form (download the MCofS version)
  • ABC Conditions of Use Form (download the MCofS version)
  • ABC Good Practice Notices (download the MCofS version)

National Indoor Climbing Achievement Scheme

The ABC has developed a new accreditation initiative for wall climbers. The National Indoor Climbing Achievement Scheme is a UK wide scheme designed to introduce individuals to climbing on artificial structures and to accredit their achievements. The scheme is administered by the ABC and has recently completed its trial phase at selected ABC walls.

The Scheme is supported by the MCofS.
