Conservation

The MCofS works for mountaineers, including promoting the conservation of the landscape, habitats and species that enhance our experience. Conservation is primarily effected through the mechanisms of designations (local, UK, national and international), and the planning process administered by local authorities. These are mainly dictated by policy of the Scottish Government, UK Parliament and the European Union. Your votes in elections therefore have a direct impact on your mountaineering activities, and it is vital you make your views known to your political representatives at Holyrood and local council levels. Mountaineers can also do their bit by enjoying access responsibly, not disturbing wildlife and generally minimising impact. The MCofS also supports projects that promote ecological restoration.

On the conservation pages you will find information about how to make your views known to the people that count, information on wildlife issues, ecological restoration projects and paths work necessary due to the popularity of Scotland’s mountains and crags. All official responses to conservation issues, as with access issues, are based on agreed position statements that have been consulted upon with the membership.
