Indoor Climbing Events for Children
The MCofS, partner climbing walls (SCWN), and Kids Clubs (The Quickdraw Club, Highlander Youth Climbing Club, Granite City Rockstars, Lead-on Club), organise a series of indoor climbing events for young climbers throughout the year in Scotland. These range from the Youth Climbing Series (YCS) to coaching sessions, beginner’s come-and-try-it events and festivals.

2011 Events
The MCofS has organised the following climbing coaching events throughout 2011. They are being delivered by MCofS recognised coaches and are catering for a range of young climbers from grass roots to elite teams.

Youth Climbing Series Competitors / Scottish Team / British Team
COST: £15 - £25 / session for MCofS members
All events are available to Full MCofS members only (Youth, Family or Club)
YCS participants who are not full MCofS members may become Youth Members at the discount rate of £10 (use the application form to join).
NB: some of these dates may change due to international competition re-scheduling

Scottish YCS + Team Event (1): 29/01/11
YCS & Scottish Bouldering Preparation Event 22 children attended the first coaching event of the year at Transition Extreme in Aberdeen. Ruairidh Mackenzie headed up a coaching group comprising Robbie Phillips, Neil McGeachy and Ross Kirkland. The aim of the event was to discuss tactics in bouldering competitions to maximise performance. See Neil McGeachy's Blog for a full report of what went down British Team Event (1): 20/02/11 First Regional Meet - Fun Bouldering Comp 10 children attended the event including 2 British Team Members, 6 kids from south Scotland and 1 from Inverness. John, Robbie and Neil were helped by Natalie Berry, Ross Kirkland and Calum Forsyth in getting the children to set their own boulder problems and then hold a mock BBC-style competition in the afternoon. See Robbie Phillips Blog full reports on the action Scottish YCS Event (2): 26/02/11 YCS Preparation Event 22 children attended the second Scottish Teams Coaching Event. Invites were opened up to all those children who had competed in the YCS last year as well as all those applying to compete in 2011 as the event would focus on how to approach the Youth Competitions. Mark McGowan joined the coaching team headed up by Ruairidh Mackenzie and Neil McGeachy. See Mark McGowan's blog for pics and a breif report. Scottish / British Team Training Spain Dates: 9th – 16th April 2011 Meet Report: 18 children and their long-suffering parents made the trip out to Siurana and Margalef in Spain. Most made it for the whole week whilst a couple made a short half-week stay. The coaches were Tom Bolger, Lynne Malcolm, Robbie Phillips, Mark McGowan, Gary Vincent and neil McGeachy. Almost all the children red-pointed 7a (from age 9-17!) whilst one of the GB Team Members from England red-pointed 8a and on-sighted 7b+. The parents loved it! and have asked for another trip later in the year. Check out Gabriella's Climbing Blog Scottish Team Event (3):18/06/11 YCS Final Preparation Event Meet Report: 23 climbers from across Scotland participated in this coaching event. Led by Neil McGeachy there was a change of coaches with Mark McGowan and volunteer Ross Kirkland stepping in for the day. The day was run as a YCS Final competition with advice to the kids about route-reading, staying warmed up and coping with a competitive situation. Scottish Youth Open Prep Event (4): 23/07/11 Youth Open Preparation Event Meet Report: A total of 16 children from the two Scottish Teams attended this prep event for the BMC Youth Open event. This is one of 2 events used by the GB Team Management to guage team memebrs dveleopment and judge new talent. The MCS also ran a judging training session led by Martin Hopkins which gave 3 new judges for the Open Event the next week.
