Scottish Climbing Wall Network (SCWN)

The MCofS and the main climbing walls in Scotland came together in a Partnership to promote climbing for all in Scotland as the Scottish Climbing Wall Network on September 6th 2008 at Glenmore Lodge.

The Scottish Climbing Wall Network (SCWN) enables co-operation and partnership working to develop the sport whilst climbing wall partners benefit from MCofS plans to promote participation in climbing at all levels: from Olympic recognition of the International Federation for Sport Climbing to increasing awareness of the benefits of climbing as a more active life style, both for children, and as a life-long activity.

Through the Partnership the MCofS recognises Scotland’s excellent large indoor climbing (Regional Centre) facility coverage from Inverness to Glasgow and world-class facilities which includes the worlds largest at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena: Ratho, and the UK’s biggest indoor ice wall at The Ice Factor in Kinlochleven.

The new impetus to establish smaller facilities at schools across Scotland, the launch of an achievement scheme for children at walls (NICAS), and the mountaineering governing bodies agreement at UK level to develop coaching in climbing for the first time means the time is right to take a national approach in Scotland.

The MCofS have drawn up a ‘Climbing Development Framework’ that will create a pathway into and through the sport, from grass-roots novice, schools participation, to competent recreational climber, indoor and outdoor, to competitions, competition teams and elite performers both in sport / traditional climbing and mountaineering.

The MCofS recognises, in the establishment of the SCWN, that the climbing walls in Scotland play a key role in helping delivery of the ‘Development Framework’ at a local level and coordinated at a national level.
