About The MCofS

Founded in 1970 by the Association of Scottish Climbing Clubs, The Mountaineering Council of Scotland (MCofS) is THE only recognised representative organisation for mountain walkers and climbers who live in Scotland or who enjoy Scotland’s mountains. We are also the national governing body for sport climbing and represent climbers who use indoor walls as their venue.

To understand the scope of what we do and how we do it, view this introductory presentation or take a look at What's Happening at Your MCofS.

We have over 10,000 members, including 7000 Club Members in 130 Clubs and 3000 Individual Members. Check out our Membership Benefits – and join us today!

We represent our members’ interests in the areas of Access & Conservation; Mountain Safety; Activities and Membership Services. Our Staff based in our Perth office (click here for contact details and location map), are responsible for the delivery of work programmes for each of these key areas, and for supporting our members.

Our member benefits include The Scottish Mountaineer - Scotland's leading 100-page, full-colour, quarterly magazine, recognised as 'The Voice of Scotland's Mountain Walkers and Climbers' and available exclusively to members.

We rely heavily on Volunteers who work on our Committees on behalf of the membership and contribute to our plans and work programmes. We are always pleased to hear from prospective volunteers and new members, so please contact our Chief Officer for more information.

You can contact our Officers or ask for more information using the Contact Form. We will always be pleased to hear from you.
