Climbing Wall Strategy
MCofS Strategy for Wall Development in Scotland
The MCofS has helped develop a network of walls across Scotland through a initiative that was first started in 1989. Through support in application for grants to awarding bodies including Local Authority, Foundation for Sport & The Arts, but particularly the National Lottery, we have secured a series of ‘Regional Centres’ and a ‘National Centre’ as well as small walls catering for local communities.
The MCofS strategy was originally drawn up in 1990 and included details about wall requirements (styles of wall, features and scale). This was revised in 2001 and after consultation with members was agreed at the AGM in 2002. Since that date many changes have taken place within climbing wall provision and a new version incorporating changes in wall design, changes in criteria for competitions (National and International), the need for coaching specific facilities, the realisation of previously planned walls and assessment of the future gaps in provision, the development of school walls as part of the health agenda and the aim to allow access to a greater range of sports to children has necessitated a further revision. As a result a 2010 version is available below with a series of appendices relating to the aims within our Strategic Plan.
