How Do I Find the Right Club for Me?
Look at the list of clubs on the Club Members page. This database includes details of the activities of the club and you should look for the following:
- clubs are divided into categories based on their main activity as detailed below, although this is not exclusive and their members may undertake secondary activities and these are listed thereafter. Many clubs call themselves ‘Mountaineering’ clubs and these will often be involved in all the different activities. Search for the club concentrating on the activity you are interested in:
- hill walking (summer)
- hill walking (winter)
- rock climbing
- ice climbing
- ski-touring/mountaineering
- are you looking for a local club, or would a National club be of interest?
- see if they have a website and look at what they get up to! Alternatively try and obtain copies of their journals or newsletters
- approach the secretary of the club and discuss how you can get involved
- if you are a beginner find out if the club are willing to take you on before going along to a meet
- initially most will invite you to a social meet. Some clubs have social evenings where prospective new members are invited. Most clubs require you to attend as a ‘probationary member’ or ‘guest’ for a period before full membership can be sought. This allows you some time to decide whether the club is for you, and vice-versa.
