How to become a Club Member of the MCofS
If you are a member of a club that is not currently in membership of the MCofS and you would like your club to join to take advantage of the Benefits of Membership, as well as support the work of the MCofS, then the following information should help you through the process.
[See Membership Categories page for definitions of 'Club' and 'Individual' membership]
The MCofS welcomes Clubs as new members and is always ready to offer help and advice. Club Membership of the MCofS is open to a club:
- whose principal object is mountaineering: walking, climbing and ski-touring/mountaineering (MCofS Articles of Association 2.3 (a) (i))
- controlled by its own members (MCofS Articles of Association 2.3 (a) (ii))
- that is either based in Scotland or its mountaineering activities are based primarily in Scotland (MCofS Articles of Association 2.3 (a) (iii))
- whose membership would be in the best interests of the MCofS (MCofS Articles of Association 2.3 (b))
Prospective Clubs are expected to supply the MCofS with:
- a constitution outlining the operation of the club in line with MCofS recommendations
- a list of active members in the club
- a membership payment for those active members
The MCofS would expect the club to:
- operate in as free a manner as possible with no unfair or restrictive ‘rules’
- not discriminate against any member or prospective member on grounds of gender or ethnic origin
- have a minimum of 10 members
- offer membership that may span any age range
- operate an access system that did not require members to be certificated in any way in order to participate or to help novices
- adopt the MCofS Child Protection Policy and take note of the guidelines if accommodating unaccompanied children
Benefits of Club Membership are detailed here.
