The MCofS administers a grant awarding scheme towards helping those undertaking climbing and mountaineering activities (~ £3,500 per annum). The funds are allocated as grant from sportscotland for sports development. The MCofS changed its grant system in 2008 to allow for a greater diversity of climbing activities to be supported, across all disciplines at any venue in the world:

  • The MCofS will support traditional style ‘expeditions’ whose objective is one of excellence and adventure whether they be first ascents or first free ascents of routes in the greater ranges and little or unexplored mountain areas of the world,
  • The MCofS will support pure rock or pure ice climbs in less remote settings but which are nonetheless worthy of international recognition.
  • The MCofS will support sport climbing and bouldering achievements which are worthy of national or international recognition
  • The MCofS will support competitive climbing at National and International level.
  • The MCofS will encourage young climbers - children from 14yr old are eligible.

The MCofS grant criteria are therefore substantially boarder than those of both the Mount Everest Foundation or the BMC (who provide funding for expeditions from their own funds) – the other major sources of funding help.

Applications for grants from the MCofS Bursary are considered direct to the MCofS and applicants have to be MCofS Members. Grants from the BMC are only available for BMC Members. Both BMC and MCofS members (and non-members) can apply to the MEF for grants for expeditions which have a scientific or exploratory aim, so it is important to make sure you know the conditions.

If you are planning a trip and think you are eligible for support from the MCofS Bursary, look at the advice in the Information Notes below, or the contact the Development Officer (Kevin Howett) at the MCofS: Tel: 01738 493 946 or if you wish to submit an application by Email: kev@mcofs.org.uk.
