Mountaineering FactFiles
A Beginners First Port of Call for Information on hill walking, climbing and mountaineering

On Black Pig by M Fitzsimons

Having trouble finding out about the different disciplines of the sport?
Not sure where you can do it?
Want to know what gear to buy to get started?
Want to know how & where children can get involved?

The MCofS has published a series of free A5 leaflets giving information about different aspects of climbing, mountaineering and hill walking in Scotland.

Each leaflet concentrates on one discipline and tells you all you need to know to get started: the basic gear required, the main principles of how you do it, what peculiarities to look out for, the strange world of difficulty grades explained, where those indoor walls are, and perhaps most importantly, the best, most popular outdoor venues across Scotland including those that are good for novices. There is also information about guidebooks and ‘how to’ books (for more detailed information), and the access and conservation issues in Scotland (which are different to elsewhere in the UK).

They are perfect for schools, clubs, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, outdoor centres and community groups introducing children to the sport, but also for any adult just starting to get interested.
