Get Active

The following pages contain information for those wishing to get active in the hills, glens and on the cliffs of Scotland or to keep up to date with what’s going on in the world of mountaineering.

MCofS Participation Statement

“The MCofS recognises that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement”

The MCofS offers advice and information on every aspect of hill walking and mountaineering as well as issuing regular news and views, background to mountaineering ethics, mountaineering initiatives and issues, and offers forums for debate on issues affecting the sport (Pitch-In).

Whether you’re interested in hill walking (summer or winter), scrambling, bouldering, rock climbing, ice and ‘mixed’ climbing or mountaineering and ski mountaineering in Scotland, the pages linked from the list on the left will help you find the information you’re after.

If you’re a novice and want to find out more, look in the Getting Started pages. Here you’ll find general advice and where to go to get more experience, including your local indoor climbing wall and walking and mountaineering clubs - there are 140+ clubs in Scotland affiliated to the MCofS and the site has details of where to find the club for you.

For those already experienced but wishing to progress their climbing some advice will be found on the Improving your Skills pages which looks at aspects of coaching.

The Kids pages have details of activities for young climbers such as the MCS REALrock sessions for climbing outdoors as well as an introduction to climbing, parental information and child protection issues.

The competitions pages have information about indoor climbing competitions in Scotland (e.g. MCofS YCS), details of the Scottish Youth Team, British adult, junior and youth climbing competitions (and the British Team details) and International competitions.

Mountaineering ethis pages cover the work of the world federation of mountaineering (UIAA), including exchange meets and joint ethical guidance on how we conduct our sport and look after the environment we do it in.

If you are looking for technical courses (navigation, avalanche awareness, winter and summer skills etc.) look on the Mountain Safety Courses pages.

Finally, information on climbing wall development, Youth development (Kids), Mountaineer Development pathways and the initiatives, events, advice and support we can give can be found under the relevant headings.
