Get Involved - Why not Volunteer to help the MCofS?

Why not indeed? You have an interest in hill walking, mountaineering or climbing, and probably love the Scottish hills, so volunteering with the MCofS is a great way to put something back. Contribute to the future of the organisation which represents the interests of nearly 10,000 members who enjoy the Scottish mountains!

What’s Involved?

In addition to the Executive which is responsible for the strategic management of the MCofS, we have three committees – Membership Services, Mountain Safety and Access & Conservation.

Each committee has regular members who are co-opted to the committee as volunteers, or as representatives of stakeholder organisations. There are occasions when committees need new volunteer members with relevant experience or skills who are able to move the work of the Council forward by contributing to the implementation and completion of our work programmes.

Details of current vacancies are listed here.

What does the Council Need?

Quite simply, the Council relies on our network of volunteers for provision of advice and support to our paid officers, and there are often interesting opportunities available. These include committee work, much of which is done between meetings, occasional administrative work at our office in Perth city centre, and helping at events and exhibitions around the country. We also need suitably-qualified climbers to assist with kid’s competitions and other activities.

Committee work usually requires participation in at least four evening meetings a year – usually held at our Perth offices. The number of meetings will vary according to your level of involvement and which committee(s) you join. There are other opportunities to contribute through individual projects or ad-hoc working-groups and these are open to committee and other members on a project-by-project basis.

Teamwork

In return, we offer the chance to work alongside a committed group of volunteers who have the interests of our broader membership at heart, and who all enjoy the hills. We offer volunteers reimbursement of travel expenses incurred on MCofS work.

In Good Company

Our volunteers include many well-known personalities from the world of climbing, mountaineering and the outdoors. Most of our volunteers are less well-known and simply want to contribute to the aims of the Council.
