Grants for Young Climbers
The following charities offer financial assistance to young people to undertake mountaineering and climbing activities.
The Andy Fanshawe Memorial Trust
Andy Fanshawe was one of Britain's leading mountaineers and a former National Officer at the British Mountaineering Council who was always prepared to help other young climbers. Following his death in 1992, the Trust was established to continue his work in helping those who lack the means to visit the world's high places. The Trust aims to help organisations or schools and less usually individuals who are offering climbing or mountain experiences to disadvantaged young people. The Trust also offers funding for disadvantaged young people who wish to participate in expeditions or on courses aimed at personal development rather than professional qualifications. In those circumstances, up to 50% of the total cost to the individual on the expedition or course is available, with a maximum grant of £500.

The Birnie Trust Sports Foundation
The Birnie Trust Sports Foundation is a charity set up in 2003, to provide financial support to young athletes aged 13 to 18 from Scotland who have shown dedication, determination and promise in their chosen sport yet find it difficult to improve and compete given financial constraints. The trust was set up by the late (Col.) Euan Gordon who was an avid follower of sports in Scotland, sponsored the Scottish Schools Athletics Championships for a number of years and personally supported several of Scotland's young sports stars. The trust funds top junior level performers or extremely talented and promising youngsters from the ‘minority’ sports. They have a strict policy of not funding football, cricket, rugby, golf and tennis; supported sports have included skiing, wrestling, canoeing, ice skating, archery, basketball, rowing, fencing, athletics, and more. Funding is intended to assist with additional coaching or help pay for competition fees and travel costs associated with events outside of Scotland. The trustees meet on a quarterly basis. The deadlines for consideration of applications are: January 31st, April 30th, July 31st, and October 31st.
