Kids: Hill Walking Climbing and Mountaineering
The activities the MCofS are involved in, include a whole range of different disciplines, from simple hill walking in summer, hill walking in winter, full-on mountaineering, rock climbing, bouldering, ice climbing, winter mixed climbing, dry-tooling, Alpine climbing and ‘big walls’ and Greater Ranges mountaineering.
Each has its own hazards and particular skills and equipment required.
You may be interested in only one, all, or a few related activities, but there is a form of progression where the skills required in one discipline help you perform better (and be safer) in another.
The MCofS has produced a guide that helps both children and parents to better understand what these different activities entail:
Parents: A Guide to Hill Walking, Climbing and Mountaineering
The following on-line FREE booklet (pdf) has been compiled by the MCofS to give parents background information about the activities of hill walking, climbing and mountaineering. Although aimed at parents who do not participate themselves, but whose children have expressed a desire to take part, to understand what is involved, anyone interested will find it useful. We also recommend it to young people just starting university or college and are thinking of joining one of the walking or climbing clubs.
