The following pages give advice regarding children participating in the varied activities that are described as climbing, walking, mountaineering and ski-mountaineering. The MCofS wishes to help young people who have a desire to get active outdoors (or indoors!) and their parents find the correct information they need to allow them to:

  • participate in a way which encourages and excites
  • undertake the activity in as safe a manner as possible
  • gain an understanding of the risk involved and methods of managing that risk
  • develop skills towards becoming safer practitioners in the future
  • have the opportunity to learn about all aspects of the sport and its ethos
  • learn about the natural environment
  • become competent independent mountaineers, climbers and hill walkers

We also wish to empower parents or responsible adults with the core knowledge and skills of the sport so they have an understanding of the activities and the risk involved and are then able to provide support to their children.
