Fort William Mountain Film Festival
10th-18th February 2006.


bigger and better than ever before

The annual Fort William Mountain Film Festival gains momentum! For nine days in February, during the best winter walking and climbing week of the year, there will be entertainment in the west of Scotland's Outdoor Capiton of the UK by a varied programme of lectures, films, activities and exhibitions.
Catherine Destivelle heads up the festival this year as the main speaker, with Nick Bullock and Andy Kirkpatrick also featuring.

There will be evening lectures presented by Cal Macanninch; Winter Mountaineering workshops run at Nevis Range and The Ice Factor; Indoor rock and ice climbing workshops at The Ice Factor with Dave MacLeod and Andy Kirkpatrick; a film and photo competition; and a week long exhibition of art and photography from local and national artists.

'Who Preserves Our Heritage?'

From Scotland, Peter Hodgkiss of the internationally acclaimed Ernest Press, will raise some provocative questions concerning the gaps in the heritage of British and Alpine mountaineering.

Andy Cave introduces his first book, Learning to Breath putting on record a journey from Grimethorpe to Gasherbrum. Bernadette McDonald's biography, I'll Call You in Kathmandu, of the journalist Elizabeth Hawley who has become the top authority on who has really done what in the Himalaya. Arlene Blum is a legend in the history of American women's mountaineering. She has produced a wonderful memoir that charts her Breaking Trail through the male-policed expedition politics. Mick Fowler is a legend in British mountaineering. In On Thin Ice he is the Tilman of our times.

In her lecture 'The Heritage of Mountain Culture - Banff and the UK', Bernadette will provide the challenge to a panel discussion chaired by journalist Ed Douglas.

The chair of the judges, Steve Dean, will deliver this year's Boardman Tasker judgement. Ian Smith will announce this year's winner of the Festival/Climb writing competition. The climax of the day will be a rare UK reading by David Roberts, one of the best mountaineering writers of his generation from his new book On the Ridge Between Life and Death.
