MCofS is Scotlandís only national representative body for hill walkers, climbers and ski-mountaineers. We work hard to serve our members and act to represent, support and promote Scottish mountaineering. When you join our 12,000 members both you and the mountain environment will benefit.

    Your subscription makes our work possible and enables us to represent your interests when we meet with government, land management groups and other agencies.
  • Access
    We act on your behalf to uphold your rights to enjoy responsible access, by safeguarding the hard-won provisions of the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 and Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
  • Landscape
    We work to protect the landscape of our uplands, and seek to ensure that major wind farm developments do not encroach on our most significant mountain areas.

  • Scotlandís Leading Mountaineering Magazine Ė Scottish Mountaineer
    The 'Voice of Scotland's hill walkers and climbers' - our quarterly colour magazine, exclusively free to members; available in both print and digital format (Flash required). If you are an existing member and wish to change from print to digital copy please advise us by email.
  • Combined Liability Insurance
    You receive comprehensive liability insurance cover as a membership, providing up to £10m of personal cover against claims in civil law. Check out the CLI FAQs for more information.
  • Mountain Safety Training and Advice
    As a member you can enjoy subsidised courses, seminars, events and winter lectures. We also offer specialist safety information cards covering avalanche awareness and emergency procedures.
  • Coaching Workshops and Climbing Competitions
    Membership entitles you to enter coaching workshops and climbing competitions.
  • Vehicular Access to Glen Strathfarrar in the Winter Season (November to March)
    The road into the glen is private; our members are able to drive up the road subject to meeting certain conditions and by contacting the MCofS office in advance. See here for full details.
  • Mountain Safety DVDs
    Our 'Essentials' range of DVDs are discounted for members and offer up-to-date advice on hill walking, winter and alpine mountaineering, ski-mountaineering and water hazards. 
  • Advice and Information
    The MCofS website is recognised as a source of authoritative information, and is maintained by our officers who can also provide you with detailed advice on a one-to-one basis.
  • Walking and Climbing Clubs
    Our 130 member clubs, offer you the opportunity to meet new friends and walking and climbing partners, as well as a range of benefits including social events, day and weekend hill walking and climbing meets.
  • Mountaineering Club Huts
    As a member you qualify for access to many of the huts owned by clubs in Scotland and throughout the UK
  • National Huts
    The Alex MacIntyre Memorial Hut at Onich, near Glen Coe, the Glen Brittle War Memorial Hut on Skye, and Mill Cottage near Feshiebridge are available for the use of MCofS clubs and individual members.  
  • Free access to BMC travel and holiday insurance schemes. Five policies covering travel, rock, expedition, trek and alpine & ski categories. State your MCofS individual membership number or the name of your club when obtaining a quotation.

  • Low-cost Under 18 Membership
    Half-price individual (Youth) membership - or free membership in our Family Membership package both with full benefits. Under 18s in Family Membership pay insurance only.
  • Discounts on Alpine Hut Costs
    Eligibility to purchase a Reciprocal Rights Card entitling you to discounts (normally between 20% and 50%) in the many huts owned by the Alpine Clubs of France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Holland, South Tyrol, Austria and Spain.  The Reciprocal Rights card is sometimes also recognised by other organisations and countries.

    MCofS operates a members' discount scheme whereby members are entitled to discounts at a number of retailers across Scotland. Please note that a retailer discount may not be available to members of clubs.
