Membership Categories

We have four categories of membership, which are defined in our Articles of Association:

Individual Membership
An individual is eligible for Individual Membership if:

a) s/he has an interest in Mountaineering and resides and/or is domiciled in Scotland or

b) s/he although not eligible under (a) above undertakes Mountaineering activities in Scotland or

c) her/his admission is recommended by the President, at her/his absolute discretion

Individual membership options include discounted rates for Concession (unwaged, OAP, student), Joint (2 adults at the same address), Family (under 18's are free but pay the insurance premium of £3.13 per person), Youth (under 18) and Graduate (for those who have just left a Student Club). Each individual member is entitled to vote at general meetings of the MCofS.

Club Members
Mountaineering, hill walking, climbing and ski-mountaineering clubs may join MCofS as a 'Club Member'. A club, society or other association (referred to as a 'club') shall be eligible for Club Membership if;

either (a)

(i) its principal object is Mountaineering and
(ii) it is controlled by its own members and
(iii) it is based in Scotland or its Mountaineering activities take place predominantly in Scotland

or (b)

in the opinion of the Board its admission as a club member would be in the best interests of the MCofS notwithstanding that it fails to meet one or more of the foregoing criteria.

A Club Member is entitled to vote at general meetings, with the number of votes determined by the number of active members declared on the club's last return. Members of clubs are not individually members of the MCofS, but are entitled to the full range of benefits which Individual Members enjoy, with the exception of retailer discounts.

Associate Members
Any company, organisation, club, association or business wishing to be affiliated to the MCofS but not being eligible as a Club Member may apply for admission as an Associate Member and if admitted shall become an Associate Member upon payment of the appropriate membership subscription. Associate Members are not entitled to vote at general meetings.

Honorary Members
If recommended by the Board, the MCofS may honour any person who in their opinion has given distinguished service to Mountaineering in Scotland or elsewhere, by conferring on her/him Honorary Membership. Honorary Members are not entitled to vote at general meetings.
