Scotland's Winter Mountains - Advice for Hillwalkers and Climbers

As we look forward to another winter weekend in the mountains, we offer the following advice:

  1. Enjoy the freedom of the mountains, but remember that they can be a harsh, challenging and unforgiving environment
  2. Don't be too ambitious with the length of your route choice - consider the weather, underfoot conditions and limited daylight hours

  3. Recent events indicate that there is a considerable avalanche risk in certain mountain locations
  4. Read and understand the avalanche and mountain weather forecasts and act upon that information
  5. Always have an alternative plan, don't fall into the trap of being too goal orientated

  6. The mountains will always be there, the trick is to make sure you are too
