Other Climbing & Mountaineering Grants For Expeditions
The two other main bodies providing financial support for mountaineering expeditions are The Mount Everest Foundation and The BMC. There are also several other awards and funds details of which can be found in the "Directory of Grant Giving organisations" produced by The Expedition Advisory Centre.
MAIN GRANT GIVING BODIES
The Mount Everest Foundation:
Created primarily to support and encourage exploration of mountain regions, particularly little explored or formerly inaccessible areas; expeditions attempting faces, ridges and summits by first ascents or by established routes in more challenging conditions; as well as primarily scientific expeditions. The British Mountaineering Council:
The international Committee of the BMC provides support for expeditions exploring remote mountain areas or making first British ascents or ascents of technically demanding objectives in the greater ranges, by obtaining and awarding Sports Council grants and/or giving an expedition approved status. Their criteria are similar to those of the MEF. Application forms for BMC grant are available from the MEF secretary. Information regarding BMC grants is available from the BMC National Officer

Nick Estcourt Award:
Expeditions attempting an objective of mountaineering significance. This might be a previously unclimbed face, ridge or summit or a repeat of an existing route in more challenging style or conditions. Applications are considered solely in terms of their mountaineering merit. Up to £1,000 awarded.

Alison Chadwick Memorial Fund:
Gives grants to women climbers or women only expeditions. Applications are handled by the Mount Everest Foundation and are automaticaly considered as part of application tfor MEF grants. There is no separate application form. Contact The MEF Honorary Secretary.

Liam Elliot Memorial Award:
Gives grants to young Scottish Expeditions (C/O Hamish Irvine, Feoran, Craig na Gower Avenue, Aviemore PU22 1RW).
The Kenneth Smith Scholarship:
Given by the Alpine Ski Club (GB) available to ski mountaineers in support of exploratory expeditions, attending advanced courses or conducting related research. Up to £600 available. Non-members may apply.

Alpine Ski Club Memorial Adventure Award:
Also given by the Alpine Ski Club (GB). Supports ski touring and ski mountaineering by assisting ski mountaineers to undertake expeditions and tours. Average grant: £200 Contact Ian Steen as above.
The Julie Tullis Memorial Award:
The BMC also administers the Julie Tullis Memorial Award, a small grant to assist deserving female mountaineers or any disabled climbers or mountaineers, both male and female, to achieve their climbing or mountaineering ambitions. Applications for the Julie Tullis Memorial Award can be made via the BMC Expedition Grant form.
The Ceinwen Faulkner Memorial Trust:
The trust provides financial assistance to the British Mountain Guides (BMG) for training of young British climbers and skiers as they progress towards their UIAGM qualification.
Andy Fanshawe Memorial Trust:
Funds available for mountaineers under 26yrs old for a climbing or other outdoor initiative. The Trust also helps fund places on training courses provided the primary reason for attending the course is for personal development rather than professional qualifications. An average award is £500.

Bill Wallace Grant:

The Polartec Challenge:
The Polartec Challenge is an international grant program designed to encourage the spirit and practice of outdoor adventure - courageous and unusual outdoor undertakings by mostly self-financing teams. Applications are evaluated on the basis of their credibility, originality, responsibility, and their ability to stand as a role model to outdoor enthusiasts worldwide. Average grant: $2,000 - $8,000.

Helly Hansen Mountain Adventure Award:
For small non-guide-based expeditions, using predominantly human-powered approaches and tactics to achieve their objectives. Climbing new routes, rarely repeated historic routes, exploring uncharted territory and those using unconventional means on unconventional routes! £2,500 in cash and sets of clothing awarded.

KORS Retail Expedition Award:
An award made available to support outstanding expeditions involving outdoor retail staff. The Award will be an annual sum of £2,500 cash that will be awarded to one or more expeditions. In addition, equipment to the value of £2,500 will also be made available.
Mark Clifford Award:
A new grant supported by Mountain Equipment to encourage and support young mountaineers to go to exciting new places. Preference will be given to young mountaineers in new climbing areas that take the pressure off "honey-pot’" regions, ambitious first ascents, interesting ski trips or wild remote explorations especially the international ranges away from the UK or the Alps. Average grant up to£2,000.
Shipton/Tilman Grant:
For endeavors that demonstrate the exploration philosophy of Shipton and Tilman - small, lighweight and innovative.

The Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship:
Often this annual award includes a category for ‘adventure exploration’. Closing dates for applications is usually October 24th Each year. Up to 100 awards are made every year.

Young Explorers Trust:
Expeditions with members below 20 years old (not usually undergraduate expeditions) involved in discovery and exploration in remote areas may be eligible for these grants. Aims can include community projects, fieldwork and/or physical adventure (climbing/sailing etc.). New groups and ones with disadvantaged members are encouraged to apply. Average grant: £100 - £500 or equipment bursaries.
