Introduction to Scrambling for MCofS Members

Is this course for me?

This two day course will focus on developing the technical skills required for tackling scrambling type ground such as found on the Skye Ridge, Aonach Eagach etc. The programme for the coursewill be flexible depending on the weather conditions and the expectations and ability of those attending.

To get the most out of this course you need to have extensive summer hill walking experience (an absolute minimum of 20 days in the Scottish Hills would be a good guideline). You must also be fit enough to ascend over 900m in a day and enjoy an 8 hour day on the hill.

Please note this is not a rock climbing course.

Aim of the course.

To develop confidence and technical skill to tackle scrambling type terrain safely and efficiently.

The two day course will be run on a 1:4 ratio. Heather Morning (MIC) andBill Strachan(MIC) will be the course staff. Heather is the Mountain Safety Advisor with the MCofS andBill runs his own guiding/instructionalbusiness.www.scotchontherocksguiding.co.uk/

The main topics covered during the weekend will be:

  • Ascending scrambling routes whilst developing safe basic rope work and belaying using a rope, sling and karabiner.
  • Selecting and using natural rock anchors.
  • Abseiling with the rope alone.
  • Route choice, route finding and assessing when it is appropriate to use a rope.
  • Confident and competent movement on steep ground.

There are two dates available:

  • Fri 27th July - Sun 29th July
  • Sun 29th July - Tue 31st July

The course price includes two nights self catering accommodation at the hut.

Course fee £70 which includes two night’s accommodation and two days instruction.
