Access for vehicles to Strathfarrar
Walkers wishing to explore the hills around Strathfarrar can gain vehicular access to the 17-mile private road under arrangements negotiated by the MCofS.
Summer access arrangements commence this year on Saturday 19th March.
During the summer season (end of March to 31 October) this access is available to everyone subject to a number of conditions detailed below.
Access for vehicles in the winter is only available to MCofS members who are hill walking or climbing.
The estates are tightening up on who is given permission to enter due to recent abuse of the system by a number of people.
The gate barring access to this private road is open for set periods in the summer season, and operated on a padlock system during the winter months. Vehicles can be taken as far as the power station at NH183381.
Summer access: 19 March to 31 October
The glen is open to vehicles at the times given below on Mondays, Wednesdays (from 1.30pm), Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. It is closed to vehicles all day on Tuesdays.
- 19 March - April: 9am-6pm
- May: 9am-7pm
- June - August: 9am-8pm
- September: 9am-7pm
- October: 9am-6pm
Last vehicle access is one hour before closing time. A maximum of 25 vehicles are permitted in the glen on a given day. You do not need to advise the MCofS to access to the glen during the summer access period.
Winter access: 1 November to late March
Vehicle access for MCofS members only can be arranged through us by email or calling our membership team on 01738 493942. Please provide:
- Your name and membership number
- Your walking/climbing plans for the day
- The date of your intended visit
- Registration number of your car
- Names of the occupants
- Telephone contact number
We will give you the combination number for a lock on the gate. The combination number is changed regularly, so you will need to call us every time you plan to visit the glen in the winter season. Your details will be passed to the estates so they can check that vehicles have permission to be there.
Non-motorised access to the glen on foot, bicycle or horse is not affected by the gate arrangements.
To avoid inconvenience or disappointment we recommend you call us between 10.30am and 3pm. Do not leave your call until the morning of your visit!
- If you are not a member of the MCofS then why not consider joining us? Otherwise you will need to park at the end of the glen and walk or cycle the 14 miles along the private road.
Overnight in Strathfarrar
