Strathfarrar Access Arrangements

General information about vehicular access to Glen Strathfarrar - updated November 2014

Walkers wishing to gain access to the hills around Glen Strathfarrar can gain vehicular access to the 17-mile private road under arrangements negotiated by the MCofS.

During the summer season (end of March to 31st October) this access is available to everyone subject to a number of conditions detailed below.

Access for vehicles in the winter is only available to MCofS members who are hill walking or climbing.  The Estates are tightening up on who is given permission to enter due to recent abuse of the system by a number of people.

The gate barring access to this private road is open for set periods in the summer season, and operated on a padlock system during the winter months.

Winter Access

Winter Arrangements - 1st November to late March

The gate-keeper is not paid to manage the gate from the 1st November through to late March. Vehicle access for MCofS members only can be arranged through our Perth office. Please provide the following information to our staff: your name and membership number, your objectives for the day, date of your intended visit, registration number of your car, names of the occupants and a telephone contact number. You will be given the combination number for a lock on the gate, thereby enabling you to gain vehicular access to the glen. The combination number is changed regularly, so please call the MCofS office every time you plan to visit the glen in the winter season. Your details will be passed to the Estates so they can check that vehicles have permission to be there.

Non-motorised access to the glen on foot, bicycle or horse is not affected by the gate arrangements.

If you are NOT a member of the MC of S then why not consider joining - otherwise you will have to park at the end of the Glen and walk or cycle the 14 miles along the private road.

Every trip you plan to make through the gate under the winter arrangements has to be notified to the MCofS.
Phone: 01738 493 942

TO AVOID INCONVENIENCE OR DISAPPOINTMENT WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU CALL OUR OFFICE BETWEEN 10.30 AND 15.00

DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CALL UNTIL THE MORNING OF YOUR VISIT!

Summer Access:

Last vehicle access is one hour before closing time. A maximum of 25 vehicles are permitted in the glen on a given day. You do not need to advise the MCofS if you take access to the glen during the Summer access period.

Vehicles can be taken as far as the power station at NH183381.

Overnight in the Glen

It is within your access rights to access the glen using non-motorised (disabled transport excepted) at all times of day or night, including wild camping (away from road and buildings). This applies if you are "responsible” under the guidance in the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, and includes using the Heading for the Scottish Hills website during the stalking season. Your access rights do not, however, extend to your car and overnight parking is not permitted in the Glen. If you wish to stay in the glen overnight you should either walk in, bike in or arrange for someone to drop you off in the glen and then drive the vehicle out of the glen.
