Strathfarrar Access Arrangements

General information about vehicular access to Glen Strathfarrar

Walkers wishing to gain access to the hills around Glen Strathfarrar (lots of Munros), Sgurr na Lapaich, An Riabhachan and a clutch of Corbetts can gain vehicular access to the 17-mile private road under arrangements negotiated by the MCofS.

In recent years the area has also gained some 50 winter routes on crags within Coire Toll a' Mhuic, namely Sgurr na Muice and Sgurr na Fearstaig east faces, and big remote offerings on the north and east faces of Sgurr na Lapaich, An Riabhachan and Maoile Lunndaidh.

The gate barring access to this private road is open for set periods in the summer season, and operated on a padlock system during the winter months.

Summer and winter vehicle access arrangements have been agreed with the Estates as follows:

Summer access this year is from 29th March to 31st October, and is controlled by a gate-keeper:

The glen is closed to vehicles all day Tuesday, and closed Wednesday until 1.30pm.

29 March - April: 9am-6pm

May: 9am-7pm

June: 9am-8pm

July: 9am-8pm

August: 9am-8pm

September: 9am-7pm

October: 9am-6pm

Last vehicle access is one hour before closing time. A maximum of 25 vehicles are permitted in the glen on a given day. You do not need to advise the MCofS if you take access to the glen during the Summer access period.

Vehicles can be taken as far as the power station at NH183381.

Overnight in the Glen

It is within your access rights to access the glen using non-motorised (disabled transport excepted) at all times of day or night, including wild camping (away from road and buildings). This applies if you are "responsible” under the guidance in the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, and includes using Hillphones during the stalking season. Your access rights do not, however, extend to your car and overnight parking is not permitted in the Glen. If you wish to stay in the glen overnight you should either walk in, bike in or arrange for someone to drop you off in the glen and then drive the vehicle out of the glen.

Winter Arrangements - 1st November to late March
The gate-keeper is not paid to manage the gate from the 1st November through to late March. If members wish to arrange vehicular access to Glen Strathfarrar during the winter months this can be arranged through our Perth office. Please provide the following information to our staff: the date of your intended visit, registration number of your car, names of the occupants and a telephone contact number. You will be given the combination number for a lock on the gate, thereby enabling you to gain vehicular access to the glen. The combination number is changed regularly, so please call the MCofS office every time you plan to visit the glen in the winter season.

Each trip you plan to make through the gate under the winter arrangements has to be notified to the MCofS.

TO AVOID INCONVENIENCE OR DISAPPOINTMENT WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU CALL OUR OFFICE BETWEEN 10.30 AND 15.00

DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CALL UNTIL THE MORNING OF YOUR VISIT!
