Scottish Youth Bouldering Championship

Scotland's National Youth Bouldering Event
The first event of this style was organised by Scott Muir at Extreme Dream climbing wall in Aviemore in 2009. It was an open event available to all climbers aged 8- 16 years old. The format was different to that of other youth competitions in the UK with random ungraded problems which competitors could attempt in their own time and in any order: 15 problems (over 4 hours), followed by a semi-final and a final with 2 minute time limits for each problem. Scoring was the same as found in the Youth Climbing Series.
The event was not fully endorsed by the MCofS due to a concern over information about injury to young climbers through competitive bouldering: the IFSC having banned international youth bouldering competitions. It was held again in 2010, this time at Transition Extreme in Aberdeen. Since then advice from other organisations and experts in the field has clarified what the issues are and we are now in a position to offer suitable guidance for route-setting at these competitions. The IFSC does not preclude youth bouldering events in home nations and many countries offer such events.
The MCofS is now pleased to support and endorse the Scottish Youth Bouldering Championship as a National Event.
The 2011 SYBC is an open event for young climbers in Scotland from beginners to elite competition team members. It includes age categories from 8yr old to 19yr old.
This is a FUN event and although you will be scored, the emphasis is on an having an enjoyable day's excellent bouldering.
Scottish Youth Bouldering Championship (SYBC)
How the event is run:
Eligibility:
- The competition is open to any young climber (boys and girls) resident in Scotland for all age categories (8yr-19yr).
- There will be boulder problems that suit all levels of difficulty so it is not just for the elite.
- Climbers in the YCS and SYCC are encouraged to take part as well.
Climbing Format:
The SYBC is operated on a quite different format to the YCS, although the age categories are the same as follows:
- 8yr - 10yr Category
- 11yr - 13yr Category
- 14yr - 16yr Category
- 17yr - 19yr Category
Format for the day and Scoring:
There will be an open qualifying round where climbers will have several hours to complete a series of 15 problems in their own time. They will be allowed to attempt the problems as many times as they wish with scoring given to the number of attempts it takes to complete the problem: 1st attempt (10 points); 2nd attempt (7 points), 3rd attempt (5 points) any further attempt (1 point). There will then follow a final and a possible super final if required.
Problem Difficulty:
Every effort is made to ensure that the boulder problems are set to be harder the higher up you get just like the YCS competitions, so everyone should be able to enjoy some climbing without being spat-off low down by a 'stopper move'.
NOTES:
- The SYBC is formarly recognised by MCofS as the National Competition.
- The SYBC scores and ranking will identify the ‘Scottish Youth Bouldering Champions'.
- The event is run on the same basis as the other MCofS competitions such as the YCS regards parents having to accompany their child and be responsible for their behaviour.
- Parents and Children (as well as all volunteers and staff) taking part in the event are expected to agree to and abide by the MCofS Event Code of Practice.
- Parents and climbers for 14-16 and 17-19 age categories should take advice about their participation in relation to possible growth spurts and finger growth plate damage. Whilst the host wall and setters will do their best to design the boulder problems to concentrate on technique and balance, rather than intensive power, dynos or feet off problems to minimise finger and shoulder injury at this age it is the responsibility of the parents to ensure they feel comfortable with their child taking part. Further information on this subject is available from the MCofS.
- Parents should also understand that injury to any young climber is possible, particularly if they do not undertake a proper warm-up. You should allow time for this before the start of the event.
- The standard of difficulty of the problems for the older age categories (14-16 and 17-19) is higher than that of the YCS to correlate more with British Bouldering Championship (BBC) standards.
- Data Protection: Entrants’ data is only sanctioned by MCofS for use in this event and will not be passed on to third parties without consent.
