This year’s climbing competitions for young people in Scotland are being held at the venues and on the dates posted below.

There were a few important changes in 2015 as follows:

1. Youth C Category will now lead their climbs, as Youth B and Youth A already do. Youth D and Youth E will continue to top-rope their routes

2. We have adopted IFSC competition scoring: there will no longer be scoring for merely touching a hold. This means that a hold will have to be held to count for a score. Moving off a hold will still count for a score, but touching a hold will add nothing more to that score.

3. scoring on Boulder Problems has changed as follows:

- 2 additional points for topping a problem on the 1st attempt

- 1 additional point for topping a problem on the 2nd attempt, and..

- No adadditional points for topping a problem after that

4. A time limit of 6 minutes will be introduced for both routes and boulder problems.

5. Boulder problems will no longer have ‘Spotters’.

6. We will no longer be demonstrating boulder problems or routes.

  • Regions:
  • There are 2 different regions.  Climbers resident across the north and west should attend the North Region Series. Those resident in the central belt and south should attend the South Region Series. Climbers resident in the Perthshire & Angus areas (in the middle!) should decide which area best suits them.
  • The dates of the rounds are the same this year for the North Region and the South Region so you can only compete in one region - the region you are resident in. Your application form will allow you to indicate which region you are competing in. This will be the region you will potentially be a member of as a Scottish Team member for the National Finals.
  • When selected to the Regional Team, you will be considered as a MCofS Scottish Junior Climbing Squad member and will be eligible for attendance at MCofS Youth Academies for the year.
  • Age Categories (2015):

We have adopted the IFSC age categories for the YCS, which means there are 5 age categories based on the year that a young person is born and each age category covers a 2 year period. For each category there will be a separate male and female competition. The age categories are:

Youth A: for those born in the years 1998 and 1999
Youth B: for those born in the years 2000 and 2001
Youth C: for those born in the years 2002 and 2003
Youth D: for those born in the years 2004 and 2005
Youth E: for those born in the years 2006 and 2007

  • Leading and top-roping:

The older age categories (children born in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003) will lead their routes, whilst the younger age categories will top-rope their routes. You can find out more about what the differences are in the MCofS Booklet "Children.... Information for Parents"
